DELAWARE DOES MORE ANNOUNCES MAJOR CORPORATE GIFT

Wilmington, Del. (December 23, 2009) – Delaware Does More, an initiative administered by United Way of Delaware and the Food Bank of Delaware, today announced that AstraZeneca has donated $100,000 to the Winter 2009-2010 Delaware Does More program, with $50,000 allocated to Way of Delaware for emergency utility and shelter assistance and $50,000 to the Food Bank of Delaware for additional food supplies.

AstraZeneca’s support of Delaware Does More began last year when the company joined the community partnership of local nonprofits, businesses, schools, faith-based organizations and others to help Delawareans with immediate needs for assistance with shelter, utilities, and food.

“It is good to know that we can rely on the continued generosity of global companies, like AstraZeneca, who want to give back to the local community,” said Michelle A. Taylor, President and CEO of United Way of Delaware. “The harsh winter weather we are already experiencing is making housing and utility assistance even more critical.”

“We started Delaware Does More in Winter 2008, when the Food Bank and United Way of Delaware began to feel the effects of the failing economy and received an unprecedented demand for help meeting basic needs,” said Patricia D. Beebe, President and CEO of Food Bank of Delaware. “We are grateful for support from partner organizations, such as AstraZeneca, who are helping us surpass the goal of $100,000 and 400,000 pounds of food collected this winter.”

Delaware Does More is a statewide collaboration, initiated by United Way of Delaware and the Food Bank of Delaware, to help meet a growing need for shelter, utility, and food assistance. To date, more than 1,000 individuals have been assisted with critical housing or utility expenses, and more than 1.8 million pounds of food have been distributed to food closets statewide. Monetary donations are collected and distributed to statewide human service agencies by a committee convened by United Way of Delaware. Food donations are collected and distributed to statewide food pantries by the Food Bank of Delaware.
