STUDENTS SUPPORT DELAWARE DOES MORE, “ONE DIME @ A TIME”

DOVER, Del. (April 7, 2009) — Children across the state are reaching into their jingling pockets in support of a special initiative of Delaware Does More designed just for kids called Delaware Does More – Kids Helping Families One Dime @ a Time.
Delaware Does More is the statewide collaboration to assist with utility, shelter, and food needs.

The campaign officially kicked off at Lake Forest Central Elementary School, home of 2009 Delaware State Teacher of the Year Mark Teesdale, on April 2, 2009. Collection can labels and information flyers are available to elementary schools throughout the state that register on United Way’s website www.uwde.org. Each student is asked to bring in one dime to support the effort. This is an opportunity for students to see that every person can make a difference, One Dime @ a Time! One-hundred percent of the funds collected will help struggling Delawareans with their mortgage, rent, or utility payments.

Mr. Teesdale, a music teacher and enthusiastic supporter of the program, said, “At this young age, children are always so ready to give. We hope that spirit of generosity follows them into their adult lives, too.” Some of Delaware Does More’s most avid supporters have been children. In November, four Newark children gathered nearly 1,000 pounds of food in their neighborhood using their wooden wagons. Over the winter, Lake Forest High School students helped sort donations for their local food bank.

“Children want to help, but they aren’t always given the opportunity,” says Michelle A. Taylor, President and Chief Executive Officer of United Way of Delaware. “One Dime @ a Time is a chance for them to make a difference in their community. And it sends an important message — the message that every donation helps.”

Delaware Does More is administered at no cost by United Way of Delaware and the Food Bank of Delaware. For more information about One Dime @ a Time, visit www.uwde.org. If your school is interested in participating, please contact Kamysha Martin at (302) 573-3761 or kmartin@uwde.org.
