DELAWARE’S UNINSURED SAVE MORE THAN $40,000 IN FIRST THREE MONTHS OF UNITED WAY’S FAMILYWIZE PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNT PROGRAM, SAVINGS AVERAGE $23.71 PER PRESCRIPTION
The program offers significant discounts on prescription medications for anyone not covered by insurance. More than 1,700 claims have been filed since the program was launched in Delaware, with uninsured residents saving an average of $23.71 or about 37 percent per prescription. “Those are real savings back in the pockets of people who need it the most,” said United Way of Delaware President Drew Langloh.
Prescription savings averaged 39 percent in Kent County, 38 percent in New Castle County, and 33 percent in Sussex County, Langloh said.
“United Way is delighted with response to the FamilyWize program. We hope that many more uninsured Delawareans take advantage of these tremendous savings. No one should have to choose between medication and food, and the FamilyWize card helps make that decision easier,” Langloh added.
FamilyWize discount prescription cards are designed exclusively for people who are uninsured and can be used for any medication not covered by an insurance plan. This includes medications not covered by Medicaid, Medicare and during the “donut period” for people with Medicare Part D. There are no income restrictions, registration requirements, or limitations on use. The amount of the discount differs from medication to medication, but the discount rate is applied immediately at the point of purchase. There are no forms to complete and no waiting for a refund.
Cards are free-of-charge and available at many pharmacies across the state, at United Way of Delaware’s web site (www.uwde.org), or by calling United Way of Delaware at 302.573.3700. The agency’s web site features a list of pharmacies where the discount cards can be found.
Commenting on the value of the card to the uninsured, Langloh said, “The FamilyWize card is a real lifeline for people who are struggling. United Way of Delaware is pleased with the early response to the program, but we hope that many more of the 105,000 uninsured people in our state take advantage of these savings.”
