UNITED WAY MEMBER AGENCY RECEIVES GIFT IN MEMORY OF PHILANTHROPIST JACK BURRIS
“The Burris family has been generous supporters of our community for decades,” said Zaida Guajardo, executive director for La Esperanza. “This gift will allow our clients to experience the full benefits of our educational programs, especially those aimed at ensuring our young people develop into well-rounded, productive citizens,” she added.
In addition to supporting La Esperanza, Mr. Burris helped change the lives of countless Delawareans, especially among the Hispanic community in Kent and Sussex Counties. He left behind a legacy of dedication and service that is still being carried out by his widow, Mrs. Lillian Burris. He actively participated in Sussex and Kent County United Way campaigns for more than 20 years; in his most visible roles, Mr. Burris served on United Way of Delaware's Board of Directors and as the Kent/Sussex Group Co-chair.
“Mr. Burris' commitment and dedication have had a lasting impact on United Way, La Esperanza, and our entire community” said Michelle Taylor, executive vice president of United Way of Delaware. “His generosity and philanthropic efforts will continue to make an impact in the community for years to come,” she added.
La Esperanza works to enhance the quality of life within Sussex County’s immigrant community through collaboration with religious, health, social, and community organizations. The agency will use the Burris Fund gift to support its educational programs, including Girl Scouts.
